Beyond that, what exactly is CBN oil? What is it used for? What does it contain? CBN, yes, but what is CBN? What are its properties? How does CBN oil compare with CBD oil? Is one better than the other?

What is cannabinol (CBN)?
To fully understand what CBN oil is, it's important to know what cannabinol is. As we said earlier, like CBD, it's a cannabinoid. However, you'll see that it' s a rather special molecule...
Where CBN comes from: CBN biosynthesis
Unlike most cannabinoids, CBN is not synthesized during, but after flowering. This may seem like a detail, but in reality, it's what makes it so special!
In fact, its synthesis is the result of the oxidation of a cannabinoid you may be familiar with, tetrahydrocannabinol, better known as THC. For those of you who don't know, THC is responsible for the hallucinogenic effects of cannabis. That's why it's banned in France. CBN is therefore an oxidized version of a hallucinogenic molecule. But rest assured, it doesn't cause hallucinations of any kind, and it's totally legal.
What's interesting, however, is that, like THC, CBN acts on brain chemistry. Except that, instead of altering the perception of reality, it induces a state of relaxation. But we'll come back to the properties of CBN and, more broadly, the uses of CBN oil, a little later in our article.
For now, in order to fully understand what CBN oil is, we feel it's important to clarify the differences between CBD and CBN.
Differences between CBN and CBD
In its natural state, the main difference between these two cannabinoids is that CBD is present in large quantities in fresh hemp flowers, while CBN only appears after a certain time after flowering, and in small quantities.
Some French varieties contain up to 15% CBD, while CBN levels rarely exceed 1%.
Secondly, although these molecules both act on our endocannabinoid system, it's important to understand that CBD and CBN don't have the same effects.
💡 A brief aside: the endocannabinoid system is a set of receptors distributed throughout the body of all mammals to which cannabis molecules are able to bind, and thus cause or inhibit certain biological mechanisms.
Rather, CBD tends to act like an orchestra conductor: it regulates numerous physiological processes to promulgate an overall state of equilibrium, called "homeostasis". That's why CBD's uses are so vast!
CBN's action is less well understood than CBD's, as it has been less extensively studied. However, studies show that its action is targeted at relaxation and sleep.
What is the composition of CBN oil?
You now know a little more about the main ingredient, cannabinol. But to fully understand what CBN oil is, it's worth spending a few lines on these other ingredients. As you'll see, there are many different compositions. And not all of them are the same!
Keep the following information in the back of your mind, as it will come in handy when it comes to choosing your CBN oil!
CBN isolate or distillate
CBN oil is nothing more or less than vegetable oil to which CBN has been added. Except that there are different ways of adding CBN.
Or you can use CBN isolate, i.e. a pure form of the molecule. This is what most manufacturers do.
Or, we use CBN distillate, i.e., a hemp extract that contains CBN, but also CBD and all the other molecules synthesized in hemp flowers (minor cannabinoids and terpenes).
At Nobilis-Product, we prefer to use distillate. Hemp molecules have been shown to work in synergy. This is known as theentourage effect. As we saw earlier, CBD offers an overall balancing action, while CBN targets mechanisms linked to stress and sleep. Combining their properties offers a truly comprehensive action.
Our CBN oil contains CBN, of course, but also CBD, minor cannabinoids and terpenes. We've simply removed the THC. It is therefore a product formulated as close as possible to what can be found in nature.
The carrier oil of a CBN oil
Once the CBN has been extracted from hemp flowers, it is added to a carrier oil.
For the body to properly absorb cannabinoids, they must be consumed alongside fatty acids. As a reminder, hemp molecules are hydrophobic.
CBN oils are formulated with all types of vegetable oils (coconut, olive, etc.).

In fact, hemp seed oil contains large quantities of polyunsaturated fatty acids, notably alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3), which helps reduce bad cholesterol levels and protect the heart.
Finally, in order to offer an oil whose formulation is as close as possible to what can be found in nature, it seems appropriate to us to use an oil derived from hemp, rather than any other vegetable oil.
What are the uses of CBN oil?
To understand what CBN oil is, it's not just a matter of knowing what it's made of, it's also about knowing its uses. In other words, the benefits of CBN oil.
As we have briefly seen, CBN oil is primarily aimed at people looking for a gentle, natural solution to overcome stress and improve sleep.
CBN is known for its sedative properties. In fact, it is regularly referred to as "the sleeping cannabinoid". Its properties can therefore promote a state of serenity conducive to both stress (whether chronic or not) and sleep disorders.
Most (recreational) cannabis users have no doubts about the sedative effect of CBN. Indeed, it's well known among them that the tranquilizing effect of flowers increases over time. This is because THC degrades into CBN. However, in scientific terms, the sedative effect of CBN, while observed in both rats and humans, is still poorly understood.
In fact, a small-scale study carried out in the 1970s concluded that CBN's sedative effect is partly due to the presence of certain terpenes. This, incidentally, supports the theory that CBN oils formulated with distillate (and therefore containing terpenes) are more effective than others.
How do I take CBN oil?
Normally, at this stage of the article, if someone asks you "what is CBN oil", you'll know the answer! The question is how to use it. Especially if you're thinking of taking advantage of its benefits on stress and sleep quality 😉
CBN oil dosage
If you've ever taken CBD oil, then you know that the question of dosage is a tricky one. There is, in fact, no universal dosage. This is true for CBD, and also for CBN.
To find the ideal dosage, start with a low dose and gradually increase until you achieve the desired effects.
The initial dose depends on both the concentration of your CBN oil and your body mass. Let's take Nobilis-Product CBN oil as an example:
This CBN oil contains 20% cannabinoids (CBD+CBN), equivalent to 2000 mg. Given that this bottle (10 ml) contains around 200 drops, we can deduce that each drop contains 10 mg of active ingredients.
It is generally recommended to start with 0.5 mg/ kg of body mass, equivalent to 35 mg (i.e. 3 to 4 drops/day) if you weigh 70 kg.
Please note that this calculation is for guidance only. If your stress level doesn't go down and/or your sleep doesn't improve after a few days, then you can gradually increase the dose, by 2 drops every 3 to 5 days.
Frequency and timing of doses
Since the main purpose of CBN oil is to improve sleep, it's generally recommended to take it about an hour before bedtime. This gives CBN time to act on the receptors of your endocannabinoid system.
Improving sleep quality helps to reduce stress levels, but if you want to reinforce CBN's anxiolytic action, you can take a few drops in the morning on waking, then at lunchtime and finally in the evening.
Note that you can also take your CBN oil in anticipation of a stressful event, such as an hour before a public speaking engagement, a trip or an exam.
Precautions for use of cbn oil
As with all products formulated with hemp extracts, CBN oil is not recommended for pregnant or breast-feeding women, nor for minors. In addition, people undergoing treatment should consult their doctor, as there may be drug interactions.
CBN does not produce hallucinogenic effects, but its sedative properties can be more or less intense, depending on the individual. We therefore advise you not to drive after taking CBN for the first time .
