CBD oil: why French origin is a key quality criterion

The potential mental health benefits of CBG
July 26, 2024When considering the quality of CBD oil, the terms "organic" and "made in France" are often among the first things noted on the packaging. These indications can be useful benchmarks, but they need to be understood and placed in their actual regulatory context.
In practice, it is not always easy to know exactly what these labels mean. Are there any CBD oils on the market today that are truly organically grown? Is it possible to produce CBD oil entirely in France, given the legal framework and constraints that still surround the cannabidiol industry?
In an industry where official labels remain limited and sometimes misunderstood, it is essential to distinguish between regulatory realities and marketing claims. This article aims to explain the current framework surrounding organic labels and origin claims applied to CBD oils, in order to help readers better understand what can—and cannot—be claimed today.
CBD oil and organic certification: what does the current regulatory framework allow?
As you no doubt know, all organic products are marked with the Eurofeuille logo (valid throughout Europe) and the AB logo, its French equivalent (optional).
To date, there is no French CBD oil that is officially certified organic by the AB or Eurofeuille labels. This situation is not due to a lack of willingness on the part of manufacturers, but rather to the specific regulatory framework applicable to cannabidiol.
In fact, CBD is currently not classified as a medicine or as a novel food authorized under European regulations. In the absence of this regulatory recognition, certification bodies are unable to evaluate the finished product, making it impossible to award an organic label at this stage.
For CBD oil to be eligible for official organic certification in the future, several steps would be necessary. CBD would first have to be recognized as a novel food by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Manufacturers could then submit their products to a specific evaluation procedure, which is a prerequisite for obtaining an organic label.
This regulatory framework is currently under debate, particularly in light of the historical use of hemp and the fact that cannabidiol is already used in certain authorized pharmaceutical contexts. However, under current European law, these factors are not sufficient to allow CBD oils to be certified as organic.
Let us now return to the practices implemented by certain manufacturers to ensure quality and transparency despite these limitations.
🧐 Can you find CBD oils that come from organic farming?
Despite the lack of official certification applicable to the finished product, some manufacturers strive to produce their CBD oils using responsible agricultural and processing practices, in line with the principles of organic farming.
These steps may include:
-
the use of a carrier vegetable oil derived from organic farming;
-
extraction of cannabinoids and terpenes from hemp flowers grown using environmentally friendly methods;
-
the use of controlled extraction processes, for example using plant-based solvents such as bioethanol.
Ideally, a CBD oil marketed as organic should meet all of these criteria. In practice, however, this is rarely the case. Most oils available on the market contain a certified organic carrier oil, while the hemp extract used does not always have the same level of certification.
This situation can be explained in particular by the current structure of the sector. Many farms engaged in organic practices focus on the production of CBD flowers, without necessarily intending to have their biomass processed in a laboratory. In addition, a large proportion of processing laboratories favor supercritical CO₂ extraction techniques, which are recognized for their efficiency and quality, but which do not allow them to claim that the extraction is organic in the strict sense of the term.
In summary, CBD oils produced using methods similar to organic farming principles do exist, but they remain relatively rare due to current technical and regulatory constraints.
🇫🇷 And if not, are there any CBD oils that are entirely made in France?
After addressing the issue of organic farming, it is relevant to consider the concept of French manufacturing, often highlighted by the label "made in France." This label can respond to different expectations, whether they relate to environmental considerations, perceived quality, or support for local industry.
In reality, awarding certification attesting that a product is entirely manufactured in France remains complex. It should first be noted that the label "Made in France" does not necessarily mean that all stages of manufacturing, or all raw materials, are of French origin. To meet this level of requirement, the "Origine France Garantie" label is currently the most regulated benchmark.
However, very few CBD oils have this certification. This situation can largely be explained by recent changes in the regulatory framework. In France, cannabinoid extraction has only been authorized since January 2022. Before this date, manufacturers were forced to source CBD extracted abroad.
As a result, the number of cannabinoid extraction laboratories operating in France remains limited, and many players continue to use extracts from other European countries. Consequently, the majority of CBD oils marketed as "made in France" are often vegetable oils of French origin, enriched with CBD extracts produced outside France.
Understanding these distinctions allows for a more accurate interpretation of origin claims and a more objective assessment of what French manufacturing in the CBD sector actually entails.
🌿 How can you find an organic, French-produced CBD oil?
As we have seen throughout this article, the lack of official labels applicable to CBD oils makes it more difficult to assess their organic nature and origin. In this context, manufacturer transparency, raw material traceability, and control over the manufacturing process are currently the most reliable indicators for making an informed choice.
Some brands have chosen to take a proactive approach, providing detailed documentation on the origin of the hemp, the cultivation methods used, the nature of the carrier oil, and the extraction processes employed. This approach provides concrete information where official certifications are still lacking.
At Nobilis Product, we design our CBD oils by controlling every stage of production, from the selection of biomass to final packaging. This organization allows us to provide, upon request, detailed information concerning:
🌿 the origin of the hemp flowers used,
🌿 the nature of the carrier vegetable oil,
🌿 the extraction methods used,
🌿 as well as the traceability and analysis documents associated with each batch.
