Joint pain (aka rheumatism) such as inflammatory arthritis can affect anyone, at any age. This chronic disease is extremely painful, and can lead to significant loss of mobility.

Unfortunately, to this day, arthritis cannot be curedand existing palliative treatments are not always effective, in addition to causing numerous side effects.

That's why more and more arthritis sufferers are turning to natural alternatives such asCBD oil.

Here is a complete dossier on CBD and arthritis:

What is arthritis?

Along with osteoarthritis, arthritis is one of the two best-known forms of rheumatism. Although these two chronic inflammatory diseases are often confused, they are very different:

  • Arthritis is an inflammation of tissues, the cause of which may be immune (rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis arthritis) or metabolic (gout);
  • While osteoarthritis is a chronic degenerative joint disease resulting from of injury or excess weight which causes premature or gradual wear of the cartilage covering the ends of the bones.

CBD can be beneficial in relieving pain caused by rheumatism. Whether it's arthritis or osteoarthritis. For now, we'll concentrate on its effects on arthritis, but don't hesitate to consult our other dossiers on the subject!

The two most common forms of arthritis

There are over a hundred different forms of arthritis, all with different causes (juvenile arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, etc.). In this article, we'll focus on the two most common forms:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis Rheumatoid arthritis: caused by a dysfunction of the immune system (due to a genetic predisposition), this is an autoimmune disease. The person's immune system is overactive, attacking body tissues with an excessive inflammatory response.
  • Gout Gout: caused by an excess of uric acid (most often due to poor diet), leading to the formation of crystals which lodge in the joint, triggering an inflammatory reaction.

These diseases have different causes, but in both cases, the person suffering from arthritis (polyarthritis or gout) suffers from :

  • Continuous pain that does not subside with rest;
  • Swelling in the affected joint;
  • Stiffnesswith reduced mobility.

Palliative treatments for arthritis

Neither form of arthritis has a cure. The sufferer must undergo lifelong treatment to reduce pain and improve living conditions.

  • In the case of gout, the person must radically change their lifestyle including diet. To combat the pain, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are prescribed;
  • For polyarthritis, we need to act on the immune system and the inflammatory response. This is usually achieved by combining disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) with biological agents.

However, these treatments are not always effective, and can trigger serious side-effects that severely diminish a person's quality of life.

CBD and arthritis: an effective treatment?

Under the guise of their action on our endocannabinoid systemcannabinoids are considered serious candidates for the treatment of various orphan diseases, including arthritis.

In fact, the endocannabinoid system is a set of receptors distributed throughout the body, with which we are all naturally endowed, and whose common objective is to ensure homeostasis ( = state of equilibrium). These receptors are therefore involved in a number of physiological processes, including the inflammatory response.

CBD's action on the immune system

Cannabinoids have an immunosuppressive effect which translates into a reduction in inflammation and therefore a reduction in arthritis symptoms (pain, swelling, stiffness).

It has been shown [1] that CBD :

  • Reduces the level of pro-inflammatory cytokines;
  • Inhibits the proliferation of T lymphocytes;
  • Induces apoptosis (=cell death) in T lymphocytes;
  • And reduces immune cell migration and adhesion.

These mechanisms are similar to those employed by biological agents administered to people with polyarthritis.

However, unlike traditional treatments whose sole aim is to weaken the immune system, cannabinoids actually play a role in regulator and, rather than immunosuppressants, are actually immunomodulators.

As a result, not only can we expect less severe adverse effects than those than those caused by DMARD- or NSAID-type treatments, but we might even go so far as to speculate that they could be the solution to autoimmune diseases such as polyarthritis, but also HIV and multiple sclerosis.

CBD to treat polyarthritis (and why not all autoimmune diseases)

In an article published in the journal Proceedings of The National Academy of Sciences ( A. Malfait and R. Gallily.) [2], researchers were able to show that oral or systemic administration of CBD helps to reduce disease progression in mice suffering from polyarthritis.

The authors emphasize that, although the immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory mechanisms of CBD are not fully understood, and this is a study conducted on an animal model (far from implying that the same observation will be made in humans), cannabinoids constitute a serious avenue of treatment against inflammatory and autoimmune diseases such as arthritis and multiple sclerosis.

This is in line with what we said earlier: CBD and cannabis compounds may be able to treat arthritisin addition to relieving pain.

arthritis and CBD

CBD to improve quality of life for arthritis sufferers

As we said earlier, CBD acts on our endocannabinoid system, whose purpose is to maintain the body in a state of homeostasis.

Consumption of CBD and cannabinoids can thus help restore the imbalances suffered by arthritis sufferers, including:

  • Improve sleep quality CBD has an anti-inflammatory action that reduces pain. But also because CBD acts on the secretion of certain hormones linked to a state of relaxation ;
  • Stimulate appetite ;
  • Stabilizing the emotional state: via action on the central nervous system, CBD is capable of increasing serotonin levels, a hormone that triggers a feeling of serenity.

How to take CBD for arthritis? Dosage

CBD is a molecule whose use is legal legal and considered safe for health. However, if you are undergoing treatment for arthritis, consult your doctor before taking CBD oil.

CBD oils recommended for arthritis

There are dozens of ways to consume CBD, but the most popular of them all is undoubtedly CBD oil. It's a convenient and convenient and effective to benefit from the virtues of hemp compounds.

Most brands offer several types of CBD oils:

  • Full spectrum CBD oil (contains all the molecules synthesized in cannabis, including the 150 cannabinoids and terpenes (it therefore contains THC, at less than 0.3%);
  • Broad spectrum CBD oil (which also contains all the molecules derived from hemp, with the exception of THC.

These CBD oils allow you to take advantage of the entourage effect. A theory that cannabis molecules are more effective when consumed together than in isolation, because they have synergistic action.

However, if you wish, you can also buy a CBD oil that contains only CBD. Ideally, you should take the time to test several types of oil and find the one that offers the best results.

Recommended dosage

Since CBD products are not products are not recognized as medicinesthere is no official dosage for them. Moreover, like any dosage, the dose of CBD depends on a whole host of factors inherent to each individual (weight, age, medical history, intensity of symptoms, etc.).

For these reasons, it's up to the consumer to determine the right dose of CBD to relieve arthritis. To achieve this, we advise you to start with an oil with a low dose CBD (between 5% and 10%) at a rate of 2 to 3 drops a day.

Then gradually increase the dose every 4/5 days until you achieve satisfactory results.

CBD and arthritis: advice and results

Each individual is endowed with an endocannabinoid system system. In other words, some people are more sensitive to CBD than others. In addition, the stage of the disease, as well as lifestyle habits, greatly influence its effects.
