In France, more than 10 million people suffer daily from joint pain caused by osteoarthritis.

The effects of the disease on cartilage are irreversible. irreversibleand to date, sufferers have no choice but to turn to palliative treatments based on anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs, which are not always effective and have undesirable side-effects.

This is one of the reasons why natural alternatives such as CBD are increasingly popular with osteoarthritis sufferers. Indeed, we read here and there that CBD oil oil can effectively relieve the joint pain caused by this form of rheumatism.

What is osteoarthritis?

Arthrosis (aka osteoarthritis) belongs to the rheumatism family, along with arthritis. Although these two types of joint pain cause similar symptoms, they are quite different and should not be confused:

  • Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease with multifactorial causes (age, weight, genetic predisposition, trauma, etc.) which leads to the destruction of cartilage;
  • Whereas arthritis is an autoimmune disease (overactive immune system) that also affects the joints, but not necessarily the cartilage.

Research into the therapeutic potential of CBD for rheumatism is particularly encouraging. To find out more, read our dossier CBD and arthritis.

Common symptoms of osteoarthritis

As we just said, osteoarthritis is a form of rheumatism a form of rheumatism characterized by the destruction of cartilage, the tissue that transmits and distributes loads when the joint is subjected to stress.

In addition to stiffness and possible loss of mobility, cartilage deterioration also leads to inflammation of the membrane that lines the inside of the joint (synovial membrane), causing pain and swelling in the affected area.

These symptoms (stiffness, swelling, pain, loss of mobility) most often affect the hands (between 35 and 45%), spine, knees (gonarthrosis) and hips (coxarthrosis).

Causes of osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is generally classified into two categories:

  1. Primary osteoarthritis or idiopathic osteoarthritis, i.e. osteoarthritis of unknown cause (it may be genetic or related to trauma);
  2. And secondary osteoarthritiswhich is generally caused by aging (65% of osteoarthritis sufferers are over 65), excess weight (joints are overstretched), an anatomical anomaly (deviation of the axis of the leg or hip), or the symptom of a chronic disease (diabetes, hypertension, polyarthritis, gout, etc.).

Whatever the original cause, osteoarthritis is caused by physiological imbalance of the cartilage. In fact, not only does cartilage produce enzymes that cause its own degradation, but it also produces poor-quality collagen, increasing the joint's fragility [1].

Pain relief treatments for osteoarthritis

To date, there is no cure for osteoarthritis, because cartilage does not regenerate. However, to reduce pain and improve quality of life for sufferers, two complementary approaches are recommended.

A non-medicinal approach (healthy diet, adapted sports activities, physiotherapy sessions, etc.) and a medicinal approach which depends on the intensity of the pain and the stage of the disease.

Pain caused by osteoarthritis generally follows two patterns, depending on the type of painkiller prescribed:

  • The chronic phaseThe chronic phase is characterized by daily but moderate discomfort and pain. In this case, level I analgesics such as paracetamol are prescribed;
  • And the acute phase (or inflammatory flare-up), during which priority is given to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, aspirin), and level II analgesics if the attack is really intense (codeine, morphine).

In some cases, the doctor may prescribe corticosteroid or hyaluronic acid injections directly into the joint, or even a surgical procedure involving the fitting of a prosthesis.

Can CBD relieve pain caused by osteoarthritis?

CBD has the ability to activate/inhibit the receptors of our endocannabinoid system, which are distributed throughout virtually all our organs and are involved in key physiological processes in the maintenance of homeostasis ( = state of equilibrium).

This is why CBD (and, more broadly, all cannabinoids) is thought to have so many therapeutic properties.

CBD and osteoarthritis

Analgesic action

Our brains is home to numerous endocannabinoid receptors (known as CB1 and CB2) which are involved in the nervous system. CBD, indirectly (and without us really knowing how), is able to inhibit the action of some of these receptors, thereby reducing the influx of nerve messages associated with the sensation of pain.

In other words, CBD acts in a way similar analgesics and opioids (aspirin, morphine, etc.) without causing addiction or undesirable effects.

Indeed, a study [2] conducted on rats undergoing sciatic nerve surgery showed that CBD reduces post-operative pain in the same way as morphine, but without any addictive effect.

We can therefore assume that CBD can help reduce the pain caused by osteoarthritis in the same way as prescribed analgesics, but in a way that is more natural and gentler on the body.

Anti-inflammatory action

The endocannabinoid system is also closely linked to the physiological processes involved in our immune system, including the inflammatory response.

In fact, CBD is said to reduce the inflammatory response [3] and thus reduce pain in the same way as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs prescribed to osteoarthritis sufferers, without the side effects.

In conclusion, CBD potentially exerts both an analgesic and an anti-inflammatory action making it a serious candidate for natural treatment of osteoarthritis.

Can CBD prevent or even cure osteoarthritis?

Due to the presence of numerous endocannabinoid receptors receptors in bone tissuethe link between CBD and bone health is attracting increasing scientific interest.

Two studies are particularly noteworthy:

  1. The first shows that CBD can prevent the reduction of bone formation, ie, the effects of osteoporosis [4]. To find out more, read our article on the effects of CBD on osteoporosis;
  2. The second shows that CBD can stimulate the production of FFAs (long-chain fatty acids), which are themselves involved in the health of various bone tissues, including cartilage. the health of various bone tissues, including cartilage [5].

Admittedly, these studies were carried out on an animal model, which does not necessarily mean that the same conclusions can be drawn for humans. And further experiments are needed to better understand the physiological mechanisms involved.

However, CBD and cannabinoids undoubtedly represent a serious avenue in the search rheumatism, osteoarthritis and bone diseases.osteoarthritis and bone diseases. On this subject, a study published in the magazine Pain [6] concludes that CBD could even be used as a preventive treatment.

How to take CBD for osteoarthritis? Dosage

There are dozens of CBD products, but in the specific case of osteoarthritis treatment, CBD oil is usually the one to turn to.

In fact, it allows you to benefit from the pain-relieving effects of CBD both orally topical topical application on the affected joint.

Which CBD oil should I buy?

There are several types of CBD oils. They all have their advantages/disadvantages, and in reality, it's up to each individual to decide which formula is best suited.

  2. Full spectrum CBD oil (full spectrum). It contains CBD, the 150 other cannabinoids (including THC, at less than 0.3%) and cannabis terpenes. It is appreciated for its ability to take advantage of the entourage effect, a theory according to which the active ingredients of cannabis are more effective when consumed together than in isolation;
  3. Broad spectrum CBD oil (oil.) It also contains all the components of cannabis except THC, which is why it's so popular.

What dosage and how often?

CBD dosage is particularly complicated, as there is no official no official dosage because CBD products are not recognized as medicines.

What's more, dosage depends on a whole host of factors inherent to each individual weight, age, medical history, pain intensity, etc. For this reason, it's best to start with a low-dose CBD oil oil in low doses (between 5 and 10%) and take between 3 and 5 drops a day. If you don't get relief, then gradually increase the dose until you're satisfied.

It's good to know that CBD is not harmful to your healthEven in high doses (1500 mg/day), however, you should seek your doctor's advice before taking it, especially if you're undergoing treatment for osteoarthritis.

CBD and osteoarthritis: opinions and results

Opinions on CBD's effectiveness in relieving osteoarthritis are mixed. For some people, the effect is immediate and pain disappears. For others, the pain diminishes significantly, while some feel no difference at all.

There are several reasons for this: the quality of the CBD oil oil used is very important, but it's not the only factor. Each individual has a more or less developed endocannabinoid system, and will therefore be more or less sensitive to the effects of CBD. more or less sensitive to the effects of CBD. Moreover, in the specific case of osteoarthritis, the stage of the disease as well as its cause can have a significant impact.

In short, the only way to know if CBD can help you relieve your osteoarthritis is to test it.
