What is fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia affects around 2% of the French population, mostly women aged between 40 and 50. It is also frequently observed in people suffering from other misunderstood ailments such as irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue, restless leg syndrome and migraines.

Symptoms

Fibromyalgia is not considered a serious illness, in the sense that it does not lead to major complications. However, its symptoms do affect quality of life.

In fact, sufferers experience neuropathic pain pain: painless stimuli (caresses, touches) or those with little pain (minimal shocks) are perceived as painful, even unbearable.

These pains are spread throughout the body and are felt throughout the day and night, causing sleep disordersThis leads to sleep disturbances, which in turn accentuate the fatigue caused by a constantly aching body. The condition also causes mental cloudiness affecting the person's ability to concentrate.

In short, fibromyalgia causes :

  • Diffuse pain throughout the body with no external cause (for more than 3 consecutive months to be diagnosed as fibromyalgia);
  • Sleep disorders, particularly insomnia;
  • Chronic fatigue;
  • Difficulty concentrating.

Causes and factors

Fibromyalgia may be caused by low levels of certain key neurotransmitters involved in pain management, such as glutamate and serotonin. But we still don't know the origin of this imbalance.

However, researchers have identified a series of factors that influence both the onset and development of the disease.

  • Certain factors predispose : a history of depression, a complicated life situation, a heightened sense of isolation, etc. ;
  • Others trigger itOther factors, such as trauma (physical or psychological (accident, overwork, death, etc.);
  • Finally, certain factors maintain the disease stress, anxiety, worry, etc.

Recommended treatments

Since the origin of the disease is unknown, it is difficult to propose an effective treatment. That's why fibromyalgia sufferers are generally prescribed painkillers such as paracetamol or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

We also recommend improve sleep hygiene (no stimulants, comfortable bedding, regular bedtimes, etc.) to promote better-quality rest and curb the chronic fatigue caused by the disease.

At the same time, you can do stretching exercises and get a massage.

CBD oil: a treatment for fibromyalgia?

As mentioned earlier, as far as the scientific community is concerned, the physiological causes of fibromyalgia remain unknown. However, Ethan Russo's the theory of Ethan Russo (a neurologist and psychopharmacology researcher) is gathering more and more evidence in its favor.

According to this specialist in therapeutic cannabis, many orphan diseases such as fibromyalgia, migraines or irritable bowel syndrome have a common cause: endocannabinoid deficiency.

In fact, according to his observations, all human beings have an underlying "endocannabinoid tone" that reflects levels of anandamide and AG-2 in the body. In other words, some people suffer from endocannabinoid deficiency, which can lead to dysfunction of the endocannabinoid system system, leading to illnesses such as fibromyalgia [2].

Good to know:

Our body is equipped with an endocannabinoid system, a set of receptors distributed throughout the body, whose common purpose is to ensure homeostasis. These receptors (CB1 and CB2) are activated by two types of cannabinoids: those we synthesize naturally in our bodies (anandamide and AG-2) and those present in in cannabis (CBD, THC and all the others).

So, according to Dr. Russo's theory, it would be possible to remedy this endocannabinoid deficiency - and therefore the illnesses it causes - by consuming cannabinoids derived from cannabis such as CBD.

If research into the link between "endocannabinoid tone" and the origins of orphan diseases such as fibromyalgia continues, we could well end up with a natural CBD-based treatment.

CBD to relieve fibromyalgia symptoms

The endocannabinoid system ensures that the body is in a state of homeostasis, i.e., in a state of equilibrium synonymous with good health. That's why cannabis is said to be capable of curing so many ailments!

The mechanisms of action of CBD with our endocannabinoid system are still poorly understood, however, several studies tend to show that its consumption can relieve most of the symptoms caused by fibromyalgia[3] :

In short, CBD oil consumption could help fibromyalgia sufferers to improve their quality of lifewithout addiction or side effects.

Fibromyalgia: how to use CBD oil?

More and more fibromyalgia sufferers are turning to CBD oil to ease their pain and reduce chronic fatigue. Here are a few buying advice for choosing and using CBD oil.

Which CBD oil?

CBD oils vary in quality, composition and concentration. For fibromyalgia treatment, we recommend :

  • A good quality product from organic farmingand preferably made in France;
  • Full spectrum CBD oilThis type of oil contains all the cannabinoids and terpenes synthesized in cannabis, stimulating the endocannabinoid system more effectively than an oil containing only CBD. These oils contain less than 0.3% THC, which is insufficient to induce any psychotropic effect.
  • But you should know that there are CBD oils that contain all the cannabis molecules except THC(broad spectrum);

Finally, in terms of concentration, we recommend a low-concentration oil (between 10% and 30%)This will enable you to dose your oil more easily, especially at the start of use. We'll explain why in the next paragraph.

Fibromyalgia and CBD: opinions and feedback
