Like most bone diseases, osteoporosis cannot be curedand its harmful effects on the musculoskeletal system are irreparable.

Certain preventive treatments combined with a healthy lifestyle can help to slow the progression of the disease, but to date, none of these have proven to be really effective. That's why many osteoporosis sufferers are looking for natural alternatives such as CBD oiloil, which is known for its many health benefits.

In this article, we'll look at how CBD oil can help people with osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis: causes, symptoms and treatments

Osteoporosis is one of the most common bone diseases, affecting around 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men over the age of 50 worldwide [1]. Although it does not affect the joints in the same way as osteoarthritis and arthritis, osteoporosis is considered to be rheumatism.

What is osteoporosis?

As we said a moment ago, osteoporosis does not affect the joints, but rather the structure of the bone (bone tissue). In concrete terms, the loss of bone mass progressively weakens the skeleton, until the slightest shock, however slight, can cause a serious fracture.

Loss of bone mass is to some extent normal from the age of 45 onwards. However, in some people, the process of bone remodelling is excessively deficient.

Good to know

Our bones are continually renewed through the process of bone remodeling. This involves the balanced intervention of two agents:

> Osteoclastsresponsible for destroying defective bone cells;

> And osteoblastswhose role is to regenerate bone cells.

Osteoblasts and osteoclasts work together to regenerate our skeleton throughout our lives.

The causes of osteoporosis are multifactorial. It may be due to a lack of bone capital from adolescence onwards, a genetic predisposition, or a poor diet. It should be noted that post-menopausal women, whose bodies no longer produce estrogen, are all the more at risk of developing the disease.

What's more, it's a silent disease. silent diseaseIt causes pain only when it's "too late", i.e. when a bone is fractured by a low-intensity shock.

What treatments?

Given its multifactorial nature, treatment of osteoporosis is primarily of a preventive nature. preventive in nature. It is recommended to :

  • Regular exerciseto slow down the loss of bone mass, but also to consolidate muscles and the flexibility of ligaments, thus reducing the risk of fracture;
  • Stop smoking, limit alcohol consumptionboth of which promote bone loss;
  • Eat foods rich in calcium, phosphorus and vitamin Dor follow a specific course of treatment.

When the disease reaches the severe stage (the person fractures bones easily), the person may be prescribed bisphosphonates (reduce osteoclast activity) or thormonal treatment for women.

CBD and osteoporosis: what's the link?

The majority of CBD's benefits are explained by the presence of a specific set of receptors (CB1 and CB2) located in the majority of our cells. This set, known as the endocannabinoid systemis responsible for maintaining our body in a state of homeostasis, i.e., in a state of equilibrium.

Thus, CBD, through its action on CB1 and CB2 receptors, would be able to regulate many physiological processes, including, perhaps, bone remodellingwhose deficiency is at the root of osteoporosis.

Endocannabinoid receptors in our bone tissue

As we just mentioned, the CB1 and CB2 receptors of our endocannabinoid system are located in different parts of our body. And according to scientists, our bone tissue harbour a substantial quantity of these endocannabinoid receptors.

In fact, one study the link between CB1 and bone remodelling in mice [2]. Observations suggest that CB1-deficient mice are at greater risk of developing age-related osteoporosis. In fact, these mice present a bone mass deficit coupled with the presence of fat in the bone marrow compartment.

This suggests that activation of the CB1 receptor via CBD consumption may regulate the process of bone remodelling.

Endocannabinoids regulate bone remodeling!

The hypothesis we have just formulated is all the more relevant as a study [3] has shown that anandamide and AG-2 have a regulatory role in bone tissue formation, notably via powerful effects on osteoblasts and osteoclasts, the agents responsible for bone remodelling.

Anandamide and AG-2 are part of a group of fatty acid amides (FFAs) present in bone tissue. But they are also endocannabinoidssubstances synthesized by the body specifically for CB1 and CB2 receptors.

To summarize:

> Our bone tissue harbours a substantial number of CB1 and CB2 receptors with which CBD is able to interact;

> Our endocannabinoid system is involved in the bone remodelling process, and so, potentially, is CBD.

What are the potential benefits of CBD against osteoporosis?

Now that it has been established that CB1/CB2 receptors and endocannabinoids (anandamide and AG-2) are involved in the bone remodelling process, the question arises as to to what extent consumption of CBD can help prevent or slow prevent or slow the progression of osteoporosis.

CBD for osteoporosis?

If CBD is indeed involved in the bone remodeling process, then its consumption becomes relevant in many ways. Indeed, if the hypotheses formulated earlier were to be demonstrated in humans, then CBD could :

  • Prevent bone loss;
  • Reduce the risk of fractures;
  • And speed up healing in the case of broken bones.

In short, CBD could be a natural treatment for osteoporosis. But, once again, it's all supposition.

Consuming CBD oil to strengthen bones

CBD is a molecule safe for your healthIt has no psychotropic effects, and the risk of side effects is very limited. Despite lack of scientific evidencethousands of people around the world and through the ages have benefited from its multiple benefits.

Choosing CBD oil

If you're interested in buying CBD oil to prevent or slow the progression of osteoporosis, it's good to know that you have 3 types to choose from:

  • Pure CBD oilcontains ONLY CBD. It allows you to focus exclusively on the effects of cannabidiol;
  • Full spectrum" CBD oilwhich contains all the cannabinoids (including THC, but at less than 0.3%) as well as terpenes. It takes advantage of the entourage effect, the theory that cannabis molecules are more effective when consumed together rather than separately;
  • Innovative"CBD oilwhich contains only CBG and can therefore relieve pain and inflammation.

If you take care to buy a quality CBD oil, and preferably an organic one, then the type of oil you choose has no real bearing on its effectiveness. It's simply a matter of preference.

Dosage

CBD products are not recognized as medicines, there is no official dosage.

That's why we recommend starting with a low dose (between 3 and 5 drops) of a low-concentration oil (between 5 and 10%) and gradually increase the dose (every 5 days) until the desired results are achieved.

In the specific case of osteoporosis, it is difficult to judge the efficacy of CBD, given that this disease does not cause any particular discomfort. We therefore recommend a long-term course of treatmentmaintaining a low dose.

Of course you can, ask your doctor-esse for advice before buying CBD oil for osteoporosis.
