CBD oil for back pain: how can it help?

            back pain and cbd oil

Although back pain can affect different people, regardless of age, sex or lifestyle, the range of medications available to alleviate it is fairly limited.

Recently, cannabidiol (CBD) has been identified as an effective alternative for the treatment of various types of pain, including back pain.

Although in Uncle Sam's country, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved CBD oil as a pain treatment, research shows that topical application helps reduce certain types of pain (including back pain) and inflammation.

This article is intended to shed further light additional insight into the use of CBD for back pain. We will explore the potential benefits and risks associated with the use of this molecule derived from the hemp plant. We'll also share our tips for finding high-quality CBD products.

            What is CBD?

CBD (cannabidiol) is a cannabinoid - in other words, a compound derived from cannabis plants. It is extracted alongside other cannabinoids such as the better-known tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound responsible for the sensation of euphoria.

CBD is non-psychoactive : it does not bind to the same receptors as THC. Some types of cannabidiol products, such as full-spectrum, contain traces of THC, but this is not enough to induce a tangible feeling of euphoria.

How does CBD oil help back pain?

While CBD research doesn't exactly detail its specific effects on back pain, studies relating to this cannabinoid's effectiveness in neutralizing pain, in general, have been very promising. A review in 2018 showed how effective CBD was at reducing chronic pain, which is best for treating fibromyalgia, neuropathic pain and cancer pain relief.

Cannabidiol has also been found to produce fewer side effects than other painkillers such as opioids.

In 2019, a study linked CBD use to a reduction in chronic pain. A large majority of participants saw a marked improvement in their condition, with little or no side effects.

A trial carried out in 2020 showed that the famous molecule derived from hemp is also useful for reducing acute pain when applied topically. CBD has also been shown to reduce itching.

The Arthritis Foundation says there is evidence to suggest that CBD reduces pain levels in arthritis patients.

CBD reduces pain primarily by targeting inflammation. It can also alter the way pain signals are transmitted to the brain, not to mention relieving anxiety caused by chronic physical discomfort. In short, CBD uses a multi-faceted approach to treating pain.

What are the possible side effects of CBD oil?

CBD has a very decent safety profile; however, some people may experience minor side effects ranging from fatigue, weight loss, loss of appetite and even diarrhea.

CBD can also interact with many medications, compromising your liver's ability to process them. That's why it's necessary to consult a doctor if you're taking medication and considering adding CBD oil to your daily routine.

What types of CBD products are there?

CBD is used in a wide range of products:

            • Oils
            • Food products
            • Capsules
            • Vapes
            • Topical products

The three main types of CBD are classified according to their cannabinoid profile:

            Full-spectrum CBD

So-called "Full Spectrum" CBD products contain a good number of other cannabinoids, terpenes and traces of THC (less than 0.3%). While this is not enough to give a high associated with cannabis consumption, it does increase the therapeutic profile of the final product. This phenomenon is known as the entourage effect and is the main reason why full-spectrum CBD is considered superior to other formats.

It also helps to stay calm and focused, to reduce stress levels. CBD has been used in numerous studies to determine how the cannabinoid can produce these effects.

            Broad-spectrum CBD

The broad-spectrum type of CBD also contains other cannabinoids, with the exception of THC. It is certainly more suitable for people who want to benefit from the entourage effect but want to avoid traces of THC appearing on a drug test.

            CBD Isolate

CBD isolate is the purest form of CBD. It is generally odorless and tasteless, and comes in powder or crystal form. However, it may be less potent overall due to the absence of the entourage effect.

            Types of back pain

Back pain is generally described in terms of location, cause and duration. Knowing these details can help the doctor diagnose the type of back pain and recommend treatment.

Back pain usually manifests itself as either acute or chronic pain. Acute back pain usually lasts only a few days, and is usually resolved without the need for medication. Chronic back pain, on the other hand, can last for weeks or even months if appropriate medication is not taken.

Some causes of back pain include:

            • Injuries
            • Sprains
            • Nervous system problems
            • Spinal cord problems
            • Kidney stones
            • Pregnancy
            • Fibromyalgia
            • Tumors

Certain lifestyles, habits and body physiology can also cause pain in the upper and lower back. These include old age, poor postural alignment, carrying heavy loads and other medical conditions.

Summary: Should CBD oil be used for back pain?

Limited research around CBD oils and their effects prevents scientists and regulators from making absolute statements about the efficacy of CBD oil for the treatment of back pain.

Although CBD has not been fully accepted by the health community, current research findings, as well as positive reviews from its users suggest that it can be a safe and effective treatment for various types of pain.

If you're considering adding CBD oil to your supplementation plan, be sure to consult a holistic physician experienced in the use of cannabis. This will help you determine the best dosage to start with - not to mention that a consultation with a qualified professional can help you avoid negative interactions between CBD and medications.
