CBN oil is a vegetable oil to which cannabinol (also known as CBN) has been added.
Cannabinol (CBN) is a cannabinoid, a molecule naturally synthesized in hemp flowers. Like CBD, it is able to bind to certain receptors in our endocannabinoid system(link to article on the endocannabinoid system).
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a set of receptors distributed throughout the body of all mammals, whose main role is to promote a state of homeostasis.
It's well known that the molecules in hemp act synergistically on our SEC. This is known as the entourage effect. However, scientists generally study their properties in isolation. CBD is known for its re-balancing properties. And CBN, for its tranquilizing properties.
For this reason, CBN oil is generally recommended for people seeking a natural solution to stress and/or better sleep.

5 key criteria for choosing CBN oil
Whether online or in stores, there are dozens of CBN oils to choose from. At first glance, only the packaging seems to vary. But a closer look reveals that they're all more or less the same.
So here are 5 key criteria that will help you quickly identify a good quality CBN oil, but above all, a CBN oil adapted to your needs.
1️⃣ Source of CBN oil 🇫🇷
Made in France is, in part, a trend on which many brands like to surf. But in the particular case of the CBD products market, it's a real quality criterion!
Unfortunately, regulation of hemp products is still very vague. Above all, it can vary from country to country. In Switzerland, for example, the THC threshold allowed in products is 1%. In France, it is 0.3%. Potentially, a Swiss CBN oil can therefore contain more THC than the legal limit established in our borders, making it an illegal product.
The same applies to manufacturing processes. Quality standards differ depending on the country where the CBN oil is produced. In France, manufacturers of CBD products are required to comply with certain standards to guarantee consumer safety.
And, as we'll see later, choosing a French brand of CBN oil makes sourcing easier. It's much easier to get information from a French contact who makes his CBN oil with flowers harvested and processed in France than from a lambda sales rep who probably doesn't speak your language and whose requirements are foreign to you!
2️⃣ Origin of CBN: isolate or distillate? 🟡
One aspect that consumers are rarely aware of is the origin of CBN. It can be extracted from flowers in several ways: in isolation (isolate) or in conjunction with other hemp molecules (distillate).
There are two main types of CBN oil:
👉 CBN oil made with CBN isolate, that is, with a refined version of the cannabinoid ;
👉 CBN oil made with distillate, that is, a rich hemp extract, which contains all the molecules synthesized in the flowers.
While it may seem attractive to buy a product containing only the molecule of interest, in reality this is not necessarily the case! CBN oils made from distillate, which contain CBN as well as other cannabinoids and terpenes (plant odorants), are more effective than oils containing only CBN.

3️⃣ Which carrier oil? 💧
As we mentioned earlier, CBN oil is actually a vegetable oil (the carrier oil) to which CBN is added (in isolate or distillate form).
The carrier oil varies from brand to brand : most use coconut oil (sometimes called "MCT oil") or hemp seed oil, but CBN oils based on olive oil, jojoba oil, etc. are also available.
The question is: is one carrier oil better than another?
Technically, the aim of carrier oil is to enable cannabinoids to be absorbed by the body. Being hydrophobic, these molecules need fatty acids to be properly absorbed.
So, the richer an oil is in fatty acids, the greater the bioavailability of the CBN it carries. And in this case, coconut and palm oil are the most interesting, as they contain MCT acids (Medium Chain Fatty Acids). This type of fatty acid is rapidly absorbed by the body and transported to the liver.
However, this type of oil is low in polyunsaturated acids, such as omega-3 and omega-6, whose health benefits have been widely documented.
In fact, polyunsaturated fatty acids have beneficial properties for heart and neurological health, as well as for the immune system. That's why, at Nobilis-Product, we use hemp seed oil, a source of omegas 3 and 6.
4️⃣ Composition of CBN oil 📋
Another criterion to consider when choosing your CBN oil is its composition! This largely depends on your needs in terms of effects.
Most CBN oils on the market contain only CBN. At Nobilis-Product, we've come up with an innovative formulation of oils containing a combination of several cannabinoids for maximum effect (thanks to the famous entourage effect we mentioned earlier).

5️⃣ CBN concentration: 10%, 20%, 30% ... ? ⚡️
The final criterion for choosing the right CBN oil is its CBN content. It's important to understand that a high CBN percentage is not necessarily a guarantee of effectiveness. In fact, the action of CBN depends largely on the sensitivity of the individual's endocannabinoid system.
In other words, some people need a very small dose to feel noticeable effects, while others will need to consume a larger dose. And the only way to find out is to start with a low dose and gradually increase until you achieve the desired effects.
But what do we mean by "low dose"?
Well, it depends largely on your body mass. We calculate 0.5 mg CBN/ kg. If you weigh 70 kg, you'll need to start with a dose of 35 mg CBN/day.
As a guide, if you buy CBN oil with a 5% dosage, you'll need to take 14 drops, which isn't exactly practical! And you'll quickly run out of oil! On the other hand, if you buy an oil with 10% CBN, then the number of drops is halved (7 drops), which is more practical.
In short, to correctly choose the percentage of CBN in your oil, you must first calculate your daily dose according to your weight.
Generally speaking, however, 20% is considered an ideal concentration, as it allows convenient dosing regardless of weight and symptom intensity. That's why our CBN oil contains 10% CBN and 10% CBD.

1 What is the average price of good quality CBN oil?
CBN is a minor cannabinoid, which means that, unlike CBD, it is synthesized in small quantities of around 1%. As you can see, the cost of manufacturing CBN oil is high, which explains why it is generally more expensive than traditional CBD oil.
Good quality CBN oil costs around 35 to 50 euros per 10 ml.
That's the price of our CBN oil. An oil made from organic hemp in a French laboratory. But above all, it's an oil whose every stage of production we control, since we're the manufacturers. Unlike brands that sell white-label products, this allows us to set a fair price, without intermediaries.
2 How to check its composition?
As products containing hemp extracts are considered neither food nor supplements, there are no relative rules regarding their composition, apart from the THC threshold, which must not exceed 0.3%.
In practice, brands are not obliged to indicate the composition of their products on the packaging. As a result, it's sometimes impossible to know whether the oil in question contains only CBN, or whether it also contains other cannabinoids (possibly including THC). And it's not uncommon for the carrier oil to be left unspecified.
We also question the accuracy of the CBN content indicated on the packaging...
To avoid any doubt, we recommend that you request the results of laboratory analyses. This report will give you all the molecules present in the oil, with the corresponding percentage. And for your information, sellers are obliged to provide them on request!
3How do I know if CBN oil is of French origin?
As we've said, one of the criteria for choosing a CBN oil is its French origin. But how do you really know if the oil in question is of French origin?
Well, as with all products manufactured in France, you can rely on the "Origine France Garantit" label. However, it's important to know that brands which manufacture their CBD products in France don 't usually hold this famous label.
The reason is simple: in France, the extraction of cannabinoids (and therefore CBN) has only been legal since 2022 .
On the one hand, very few manufacturers use CBN extracted in France, because there are very few laboratories. And on the other hand, those who do produce their products in a French laboratory, as is our case at Nobilis-Product, are still in the procurement phase... The bureaucracy being particularly complex.
4How do I know if a CBN oil is really organic?
More and more of you are opting for organic products, and therefore for organic CBN oil. Unfortunately, to date (September 2024), there is no official label or certification guaranteeing the organic origin of CBN oil or any CBD product.
As we said earlier, CBD products do not belong to any product class. As they are neither foods nor supplements, there are no appropriate labels...
