Every month, it's the same story: your period is terribly painful, and your mood... Let's not talk about it. Ibuprofen more or less relieves the pain, but as you know, its effects on the body are not harmless. Besides, is taking anti-inflammatories at every turn really the (right) solution?

In short, you're seriously considering trying CBD oil to relieve your painful periods. But first, you have several questions. The Nobilis team is happy to answer them.

Attention

Excessive menstrual pain, known as dysmenorrhea, can be a symptom of an underlying uterine disease such as endometriosis. If you experience pain during your period, the first thing to do is consult a gynecologist.

Can CBD really relieve painful periods?

Cannabis has been used since the dawn of time by women the world over during menstruation. We know, for example, that Cleopatra and Queen Victoria used cannabis decoctions to relieve menstrual pain.

More recently, we've been reading more and more positive and encouraging positive testimonials from women who use cannabis or CBD-based products to relieve their painful periods.

... What does science have to say?

There are cannabinoid receptors in the uterus!

A few years ago, Dr John Thiel [1] (Provincial Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Saskatchewan in Regina) published a groundbreaking discovery: the uterus is home to numerous cannabinoid receptors.he uterus is home to numerous cannabinoid receptors.

Cannabinoid receptors have a particular affinity with the active molecules in cannabis such as CBD and THC (hence their name).

In other words, CBD can bind to the walls of the uterus, thereby activating/inhibiting certain biological mechanisms, including the inflammatory response.

On the face of it, then, CBD could well and truly relieve painful periods. But there's a but.

What about scientific proof?

Dr John Thiel's discovery represents a major step forward in research into the treatment of various uterine diseases such as endometriosis and uterine cancer.

Unfortunately, the studies carried out to date are to prove anything..

Observations often concern a small a small sample. For example, Dr. Thiel recently showed that 60% of women suffering from pelvic pain treated with cannabis reported a positive effect. But this study involved only 134 women...

Other studies have been carried out, often with very encouraging results. This is the case, for example, of a study carried out in 2010 [2], which concluded that the endocannabinoid system appears to be involved in relieving menstrual pain. But this conclusion is based on an experiment conducted on ratswhich does not constitute proof.

In short, scientifically speaking, CBD's effectiveness in relieving painful periods is unproven. However, CBD has not said its last word...

CBD to relieve menstrual cramps with a holistic approach

Admittedly, there is no formal, specific evidence regarding CBD's effectiveness in relieving painful periods. But it's a fact, CBD acts on our endocannabinoid systemsystem, whose mission is to maintain the body in a state of homeostasis.

In other words, if CBD can help restore a certain balancethen couldn't its consumption help reduce menstrual pain?

Menstrual pain: a sign of global imbalance

It's important to understand one thing: excessive pain during your period is not normal. not normal. The expulsion of the endometrium, the inner lining of the uterus, is certainly provoked by contractions, but their intensity shouldn't be so incapacitating that you have to stay in bed!

In fact, if your periods are painful and/or heavy, it's a sign that :

  1. Your body secretes too much prostaglandinthe protein that triggers uterine contractions to expel the endometrium, which is also responsible for pain signals;
  2. Your endocrine system synthesizes too much adenosinea hormone that causes blood vessels to dilate.

The problem is that this disruption can be caused by by anything and everything. From stress, to diet, to genetic predisposition. That's why current treatments only act on the symptom (pain) and not on the cause of dysmenorrhoea.

In this sense, a more holistic approach, i.e., more globalis perhaps the right approach to take. And that's where CBD comes in as a relevant solution for relieving painful periods.

CBD to restore homeostasis (and reduce period pain)

As we mentioned earlier, our bodies are dotted with cannabinoid receptors. This system is called the endocannabinoid system. Its mission: to maintain homeostasis (=the body's state of equilibrium). To do this, it secretes the endocannabinoids anandamide and 2-AG.

Together, these neurotransmitters act on several levels, including our immune system, our endocrine systemour nervous system, and our digestive system. Cannabinoid receptors are located on the surface of key organs: the brain, digestive tract, pancreas, uterusetc.

These cannabinoid receptors are also compatible with phytocannabinoids such as CBD and THC. That's why they're believed to have many virtues, and why taking CBD (or medicinal cannabis) is potentially good for your health.

In the context of the subject that interests us, painful periods, taking CBD, through its action on cannabinoid receptors, could :

  • Reduce inflammationand therefore pain, thanks to its anti-inflammatory action;
  • Balancing hormone secretionand thus regulate moods, as well as blood flow, via its action on the endocrine system.

Of course, we shouldn't expect miracles. As we'll discuss shortly, CBD is a capricious molecule, which only works if administered in the right proportions.

How to use CBD oil to soothe menstrual pain?

As you may have noticed, there are a host of products formulated with hemp and CBD. The best-known is undoubtedly CBD oil, which comes in various different concentrations (from 5% to 40% CBD) and different compositions (isolate, broad or full spectrum).

Faced with this vast choice, one question persists: what's the best CBD oil for relieving painful periods?

How to choose your CBD oil for menstruation?

Choosing a CBD oil should be based on answering three questions:

  1. Am I willing to consume an oil that contains a little THC (less than 0.3%)? If yes, then I can choose a full spectrum CBD oil. If not, then I'll look into broad spectrum CBD oils.
  2. What level of CBD should I buy? If you're just starting out with CBD, we recommend starting with a low-dose oil (between 5 and 10%). If you don't notice any effect, then you can switch to a more concentrated oil;
  3. Which brand to choose? A French brand that manufactures its own products, uses organic raw materials and provides laboratory analysis results to guarantee cannabinoid concentration and the absence of harmful substances ... A brand like Nobilis !
