Mood disorders: causes, symptoms and treatments
CBD is a molecule talked about for its many potential benefits. Among them, its ability to bring a feeling of relaxation and serenity highly prized by people suffering from mood disorders.
What are mood disorders?
Mood is a state of mind dominated by an emotion such as sadness, joy or anger. Usually, we are able to to identify the cause of an emotion, and even to control it, but sometimes this ability is biased.
In fact, some people experience emotions (usually negative ones) so intensely that intense that they are unable to free themselves from their grip. In short, they are totally at their mercy, to the point of not being able to identify the cause.
This condition leads to two types of symptoms [1] :
- Physical symptoms Physical symptoms: fatigue, lethargy, sleep disorders (insomnia or hypersomnia), appetite disorders, neglected personal hygiene;
- Psychological symptoms Psychological symptoms: feelings of extreme sadness for no apparent reason, loss of interest in normally pleasurable activities, desire to harm oneself, suicidal thoughts.
The most common and well-known form of mood disorder is depressionbut some people go on to develop bipolar disorder (they experience phases of intense joy followed by phases of depression), while others develop a milder form of depression (called dysthymia).
What causes mood disorders?
Like many psychological conditions, the causes of mood disorders remain unclear. unclear.
It seems that some people are genetically genetically predisposed mood disorders, but there is no definite proof that they are hereditary. On the other hand, a person who lacks self-confidence is logically more prone to mood disorders, as they are by nature sensitive to external events, but this remains highly subjective.
Mood disorders are most often triggered by an intense traumatic such as death, separation, job loss, burn-out, etc. It can also be the evolution of a chronic stress state or an anxiety disorder. It can also be the evolution of a chronic stress state or an anxiety disorder.
What treatments?
In most cases, before considering medication, people with mood disorders are first advised to therapy.
Indeed, externalizing a blocked emotion, or verbalizing a traumatic situation is sometimes enough to reduce symptoms, even if these people are generally invited to adopt a healthy lifestyle (no alcohol, no drugs, regular exercise, balanced diet) to avoid any relapse.
However, sometimes the severity of the mood disorder justifies the use of chemical chemical treatment. In this case, an antidepressant (serotonin reuptake inhibitor) or an anxiolytic (benzodiazepine) is usually prescribed, when the situation is really worrying.
Can CBD regulate mood disorders?
If CBD is arousing increasing interest in the scientific sphere, particularly with regard to mental illnesses, it's not without reason.
In fact, CBD (and all the cannabinoids in cannabis) acts on a set of receptors that occur naturally within our bodies (the endocannabinoid system), whose common goal is to ensure a state of homeostasis - in other words, a state of equilibrium, synonymous with good health.
CBD interaction with the limbic system
The receptors of the endocannabinoid system are distributed throughout the body.
Some of them are housed in the brainThis is of particular interest here, as these organs regulate emotional states, among other things.
The mechanism of action of CBD on the limbic system is not yet fully understood, but it would appear to be able to regulate its functioning by increasing blood flow, thus restoring normal dopamine and serotonin levels [2].
Further studies are of course needed, but the presence of endocannabinoid receptors in this region of the brain is probably no coincidence.
CBD's relaxing action
CBD's effects on the brain are not limited to the limbic system. It also appears to have a high affinity for the GABAreceptors, found mainly in the cortex and cerebellum [3].
GABA is a neurotransmitter released by the brain to regulate heart rate and blood pressure after a stressful event.
This would explain why taking CBD induces a state of relaxation and why people prone to stress and anxiety achieve particularly satisfying results. People with mood disorders could also benefit from this effect.
However, it must be borne in mind that further studies are needed, and that the discoveries are still in their infancy. Indeed, the scientific community currently has only a partial and incomplete understanding of the physiological mechanisms involved.

It should also be borne in mind that the dosage of a product depends on weight, age and the intensity of the symptoms to be treated.
For this reason, it is advisable to start with a low dose. with a low dose (between 3 and 5 drops/day), of a low-dose oil (between 5 and 10% CBD) and gradually increase if necessary.

The fact is that the effectiveness of CBD - like many natural products - depends on on a large number of factors. It is difficult to predict its effects and the results obtained.
